3. Physical Properties

  • Appearance: Silvery-white metallic solid
  • Density (20 °C): 7.01 g/cm³
  • Melting Point: 1024 °C
  • Boiling Point: 3074 °C
  • Crystal Structure: Hexagonal close-packed (HCP)
  • Mohs Hardness: 3.5
  • Electrical resistivity (25 °C): 64.3 μΩ·cm
  • Odor: Odorless
  • Solubility: Insoluble in water

4. Chemical Properties

  • Easily oxidizes in humid air; surface forms neodymium oxide layer.
  • Reacts slowly with cold water, vigorously with hot water, releasing hydrogen.
  • Dissolves readily in dilute mineral acids to produce neodymium salts.
  • Highly reactive at elevated temperatures with oxygen, nitrogen and halogens.
  • Principal oxidation state: +3.
  • Moisture and air sensitive; long-term atmospheric exposure is prohibited.

5. Handling & Storage

  • Storage: Hermetically sealed packaging, preferably under inert argon shielding. Store in cool, dry location, isolated from moisture, water and acids.
  • Handling: Avoid creating metal dust. Prevent direct contact with humid air.
  • Standard Packaging: Vacuum plastic bag + steel drum, backfilled with argon.

6. Applications

  1. Primary raw material for sintered & bonded NdFeB permanent magnets
  2. Additive for magnesium, aluminum and rare earth alloys
  3. Hydrogen storage alloy raw material
  4. Sputtering targets, rare earth master alloys
  5. Glass and ceramic colorants
